More than 7,500 rural homes and businesses across South Wiltshire can now access gigabit-capable broadband through Wessex Internet. The company has completed more than 40% of a Project Gigabit rollout now expected to cover around 18,700 properties.
The new Full Fibre network runs fibre-optic cable directly into each property, removing the older copper connection between your home and the roadside cabinet. Wessex Internet says its network can deliver speeds of up to 10Gbps, although the speed you receive will depend on the package you order.
Construction began in September 2024, with the first Project Gigabit connection completed in Bapton three months later. The network is expanding through the Wylye Valley and across Salisbury Plain, taking in villages around Amesbury and stretching north towards Chisbury and Little Bedwyn.

This rollout is much larger than first planned
Wessex Internet’s contract originally covered around 14,500 hard-to-reach properties when it was awarded in March 2024. Government figures now put its scope at 18,790. Building Digital UK recorded 6,390 completed properties on 21 May 2026, so the latest 7,500 figure suggests more than 1,100 have been added since that reporting snapshot.
Wessex Internet opened a construction base in Codford, between Warminster and Salisbury, to support the five-year build. The site was expected to employ at least 15 people, including drilling and ploughing teams, engineers, surveyors and network planners. Its position near the A303 and A36 gives construction crews relatively easy access to the wider rollout area.
Wiltshire Council cabinet member Helen Belcher praised Wessex Internet’s progress and its work with rural communities, while chief executive Hector Gibson Fleming called the 7,500-property mark a ‘brilliant milestone’. Having the network pass your property doesn’t upgrade your broadband automatically, however. You’ll still need to check availability and order a suitable Wessex Internet package.
