TalkTalk’s adaptive-speed broadband package, TalkTalk U, raises interesting questions

TalkTalk’s unusual new Full Fibre package moves between four speed tiers according to how you use your connection, but your monthly bill won’t fall if your speed does.

That one-month delay could matter because total usage and required speed aren’t the same thing. Streaming television for hours consumes plenty of data without needing a particularly fast connection, while downloading a 150GB game creates a sudden demand for speed. If that happens after a relatively quiet month, you could be sitting on a slower tier precisely when the additional speed would be most useful.

TalkTalk U takes a familiar broadband package and removes one of its most basic certainties: the speed you order. Instead of choosing 65Mbps, 150Mbps, 500Mbps or 900Mbps and keeping it, TalkTalk decides which of those four speeds you’ll receive each month.

The decision is based on how you used your connection during the previous month. TalkTalk’s system can move you up if it decides you need more speed or down if your usage suggests you can manage with less. It isn’t an instant boost that detects a large download and opens the taps there and then; each month’s usage informs the speed you receive next.

Prices start at £25 per month on a 24-month contract with no setup fee. Larger homes can cost more if TalkTalk recommends additional Wi-Fi extenders, with its small print listing TalkTalk U starting prices of £25, £28 and £31. The £25 version rises to £29 in April 2027 and £33 in April 2028. It’s currently available to new users at eligible addresses, while existing TalkTalk users cannot yet switch to it.

Last month’s usage decides next month’s broadband speed

A move from 65Mbps to 900Mbps won’t increase your bill, which could make TalkTalk U excellent value during heavier months. The same rule applies in reverse: drop from 900Mbps to 65Mbps and you’ll carry on paying exactly the same amount. TalkTalk’s fixed-speed packages remain available, including Full Fibre 150 from £24, Full Fibre 500 from £30 and Full Fibre 900 from £36.

ThinkBroadband spotted the package and checked several addresses. The offers it found quoted average household download speeds of 50–80Mbps, with a 55Mbps minimum guarantee, despite TalkTalk U having the potential to reach 900Mbps. Its sample checks also included a single Wi-Fi booster, although your equipment and price will depend on the property information TalkTalk receives for your address.

The unanswered question isn’t when the adjustment happens; TalkTalk has made that clear. It’s how much usage earns each speed tier and whether last month tells TalkTalk anything useful about next month. Hours of streaming can consume plenty of data without needing a particularly fast connection. A sudden 150GB game download needs a lot of speed, but might arrive immediately after a quiet month has moved you down.
