Plusnet routers review: How good are they?

Plusnet offer just the one router no matter which package you choose: the Plusnet Hub Two. And to say it’s getting rather long in the tooth would be a bit of an understatement. Is it capable, though? Being old doesn’t always mean bad. Let’s take a look.

Wi-Fi quality

Plusnet keeps things simple, although not in a good way. Every Full Fibre package comes with the same ageing Hub Two, including its 900Mbps service. It’s a respectable Wi-Fi 5 router underneath, but there’s no newer model, premium upgrade or supported mesh system if you need something better.

Key differences

One router covers every package

Whether you choose Full Fibre 74 or Full Fibre 900, Plusnet sends you the Hub Two. That’s convenient for Plusnet, but it means paying for a faster connection doesn’t get you more capable Wi-Fi hardware.

There’s decent hardware underneath

Seven internal antennas, beamforming and a 4x4 5GHz radio make the Hub Two better than its age might suggest. It should cope with an ordinary household reasonably well, but those features can’t turn Wi-Fi 5 into a modern wireless standard.

Plusnet gives you no upgrade route

There’s no premium Plusnet router, provider-managed mesh system, whole-home Wi-Fi add-on or coverage guarantee. If the Hub Two can’t reach every room, you’ll need to buy and configure third-party equipment yourself.

Full Fibre 900 shows up its age

Pairing an old Wi-Fi 5 router with a 900Mbps package is difficult to defend in 2026. The Hub Two also lacks WPA3 and multi-gigabit Ethernet, while its WAN connection leaves Full Fibre customers with three usable Gigabit LAN ports.

Which Plusnet router do you get?

Plusnet Hub Two

Included across Plusnet's current Fibre and Full Fibre range.

It is a dual-band Wi-Fi 5 router with Gigabit Ethernet, beamforming and a strong 4x4 radio on the 5GHz band.

No router upgrade

Even the 900Mbps package receives the same Hub Two.

Plusnet offers no newer premium router, app-managed replacement or package-specific equipment upgrade.

Third-party equipment

Customers must provide their own upgrade for newer Wi-Fi or mesh coverage.

On Full Fibre, a compatible third-party router can replace the Hub Two and connect directly to the Openreach ONT.

A once-capable router Plusnet should have replaced some time ago

The Hub Two isn’t a complete disaster. Its seven internal antennas, beamforming and 4x4 5GHz radio give it more substance than the average bargain-bin router. In a modest home with a fairly ordinary collection of devices, it may do everything you need without much fuss.

The trouble is that it’s still built around Wi-Fi 5. You don’t get the improved efficiency of Wi-Fi 6, support for the 6GHz band or WPA3 security. Those omissions become harder to overlook as you add more phones, laptops, televisions and smart-home devices to the network.

They look particularly ungainly alongside Full Fibre 900. A fast connection can only do so much if your wireless hardware struggles to distribute that speed around the home. Wired users get Gigabit Ethernet, although the Full Fibre connection occupies one of the Hub Two’s four ports and leaves three available for other equipment.

The absence of an upgrade path is the bigger problem. Plusnet doesn’t offer a better router, supported mesh kit, whole-home Wi-Fi service or coverage guarantee. You can replace the Hub Two with compatible third-party equipment on Full Fibre, but you’ll have to choose, buy and configure it yourself. A budget broadband package can be inexpensive without saddling every customer with dated hardware.

Router range

The Plusnet Hub Two has respectable hardware for an older router, but Plusnet makes no promises about how much of your home it will cover. There’s also no choice of router and no supported whole-home Wi-Fi system waiting in reserve. If its signal falls short, fixing that is largely left to you.

Seven antennas sound better than they prove

The Hub Two contains seven internal antennas, alongside beamforming and a 4x4 5GHz radio. That’s a respectable specification for Wi-Fi 5 and should give you usable coverage across many smaller and average-sized homes.

However, antenna count alone can’t tell you how far the signal will travel. Plusnet publishes no coverage area, room guarantee or minimum in-home Wi-Fi speed, so there’s no meaningful promise behind the hardware.

Your home gets no say in the router

Plusnet supplies the same Hub Two with every package from Full Fibre 74 to Full Fibre 900. It doesn’t matter whether you live in a flat or a long, heavily divided house. There’s no alternative router designed for more demanding properties.

That one-size-fits-all approach is the real weakness. The Hub Two may cover your home perfectly well, but Plusnet gives you no better option if you already know that one router won’t be enough.

The usual walls still win

The Hub Two uses the familiar 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi bands. The slower 2.4GHz signal should travel further and cope better with walls, while 5GHz gives you more speed when you’re closer to the router.

Thick brickwork, stone walls, insulation, floors and neighbouring networks can still knock either band about. Wi-Fi 5 also handles busy homes less efficiently than Wi-Fi 6, so range isn’t the only concern once plenty of devices start competing for airtime.

There’s no Plusnet safety net

Plusnet offers no mesh system, Wi-Fi extender package, whole-home service or coverage guarantee. If the signal won’t reach a bedroom or home office, Plusnet can’t simply add one of its own managed boosters to solve it.

You can buy a third-party mesh system or replace the Hub Two with a compatible router on Full Fibre. That may fix the problem, but choosing, paying for and configuring the equipment becomes your job. It’s a poor answer when other providers offer a supported route to better coverage.

How to use the Router Range Estimator

It’s pretty straightforward. Select the router from this provider, and the main construction materials of your internal walls. It’s important to remember, though, that this is just an estimator.

It can give you a rough idea, but local factors like neighbouring network interference or mixed material wall set-ups can mean the results vary considerably from the estimate. It’s meant to give you a rule of thumb and only that.

How to maximise your Plusnet router's range

  1. Start with placement

    Put the Plusnet Hub Two near the middle of your home if you can, out in the open and away from thick walls or cupboards.

  2. Test every room

    Run a speed test where you actually use Wi-Fi. Our Whole Home Wi-Fi Calculator further down this page is built for exactly that.

  3. Check the Hub Manager

    Plusnet has no customer app, so use the Hub Manager, My Account and room-by-room speed tests to check the connection and connected devices.

  4. Move obvious blockers

    Keep the hub away from TVs, mirrors, metal objects, appliances and anything that boxes it in. Give the signal space to leave the router.

  5. Add your own mesh system

    Plusnet offers no whole-home add-on. If rooms still struggle, use third-party mesh equipment or replace the Hub Two with a compatible router.

Faster Wi-Fi has shorter legs

Wi-Fi behaves exactly like sound. Ever notice how you hear the bass, meaning the low frequencies, a few rooms away, but can't hear the treble? It's the same here. The higher the frequency, the more detail there is in the signal, but lower frequencies make it through far more walls.

That's the difference between Wi-Fi bands. 2.4GHz is the slow old workhorse. It isn't glamorous or especially quick, but it's better at reaching the awkward room at the back. 5GHz is faster and better for streaming, gaming and newer devices, but it gives up sooner as you move away from the router.

The Plusnet Hub Two uses dual-band Wi-Fi 5. Its 2.4GHz radio provides the better reach while 5GHz handles faster nearby connections. Plusnet offers no newer router, 6GHz band or provider-managed mesh system, so difficult rooms require third-party equipment.

Seven antennas, beamforming and a 4x4 5GHz radio give the Hub Two reasonable potential in an average home. However, Plusnet publishes no coverage promise and offers no mesh system, better router or whole-home guarantee. If one ageing Wi-Fi 5 router can’t cover your property, you’re expected to fix the problem yourself.

This score estimates how well the provider’s standard routers are likely to deliver usable Wi-Fi speeds around a typical home, not just whether a faint signal reaches the back bedroom.

Whole-home Wi-Fi

Plusnet has no whole-home Wi-Fi service at all. There’s no upgraded router, no extra units to spread the signal between rooms and no coverage guarantee. If the Hub Two can’t reach part of your home, Plusnet leaves you to find and pay for your own solution.

Plusnet gives you one router and nothing else

Every Full Fibre package includes the same Plusnet Hub Two. You can’t choose a better router when you join, and moving to a faster package won’t change the equipment you receive.

That becomes a problem if one router can’t cover your home. Plusnet doesn’t supply Wi-Fi boosters or a mesh system, where additional units placed around the property pass the signal from room to room. There isn’t even a paid Plusnet option you can add later.

More broadband speed won’t reach a Wi-Fi blackspot

It’s easy to assume that upgrading your broadband speed will improve the Wi-Fi everywhere. It won’t. If thick walls, several floors or a long distance from the router are causing the problem, a faster connection will still struggle to reach that room.

This matters most on Plusnet’s fastest packages. You could have plenty of speed entering the property while a distant bedroom or home office receives very little of it. Without additional equipment, the Hub Two has to cover the entire home by itself.

Fixing poor coverage becomes your project

You’re not completely trapped if the Hub Two falls short. You can buy Wi-Fi boosters, install a third-party mesh system or replace the router with a compatible model. Any of those could improve coverage substantially.

However, you’ll have to choose the equipment, check that it works with Plusnet, set it up and deal with any problems yourself. Plusnet doesn’t manage the extra hardware or guarantee the result.

That’s the crucial failure here. Plenty of providers charge extra for their best whole-home Wi-Fi services, which isn’t ideal. Plusnet is worse because it gives you no supported upgrade at any price. For larger or more difficult homes, you’re buying broadband from Plusnet and then building the home Wi-Fi solution yourself.

Plusnet’s whole-home Wi-Fi service doesn’t disappoint because it costs extra or excludes cheaper packages. It disappoints because it doesn’t exist. If the Hub Two can’t cover your property, Plusnet offers no better router, extra Wi-Fi units or coverage guarantee. You’ll need to buy and configure your own solution.

    Wired connectivity

    The Plusnet Hub Two gives you three sockets for plugging devices directly into the router. They’re fast enough for every Plusnet package, including Full Fibre 900, and should cover the essentials in most homes. The only real limitation is that Plusnet offers nothing faster for people with more demanding home networks.

    Four sockets become three on Full Fibre

    The Hub Two has four Gigabit Ethernet sockets, but one connects the router to the Full Fibre equipment installed in your home. That leaves three available for your television, games console, computer or anything else that benefits from a cable.

    Three should be enough for many homes. If you need more, you can add an Ethernet switch to create additional connections, although that means buying and powering another piece of equipment.

    The sockets are fast enough for every package

    Each available socket can handle speeds of up to 1Gbps. That’s enough to carry the full speed of Plusnet’s fastest 900Mbps package to one compatible device, so the wired connections don’t hold back any broadband package Plusnet currently sells.

    You’re also unlikely to find an ordinary home device that needs anything faster. A wired television, console or work computer will have far more capacity than most everyday tasks require.

    How a simple wired Plusnet network works

    Plugging devices directly into your router gives them a steadier connection than Wi-Fi. These router diagrams show the physical Ethernet ports, including any ONT or internet port used by the broadband connection itself.

    Advanced home networks hit the ceiling

    The Hub Two has no faster socket for high-end computers, network storage or moving very large files between devices. Every wired connection tops out at 1Gbps.

    That won’t matter to most people, and it doesn’t limit Plusnet’s broadband speeds. It only becomes relevant if you’ve built a more advanced home network and want devices inside it to communicate faster than your internet connection.

    For ordinary use, Plusnet gets the basics right. Plug in the devices that need the steadiest connection, such as a games console or work computer, and leave phones, tablets and less demanding equipment on Wi-Fi.

    How to make best use of your Plusnet router's LAN ports

    1. Count the usable ports

      On Full Fibre, the Hub Two uses one of its four Gigabit Ethernet sockets for the ONT, leaving three LAN ports for your devices.

    2. Gigabit covers Full Fibre 900

      A Gigabit Ethernet port can carry Plusnet's Full Fibre 900 service once normal networking overheads are allowed for.

    3. No multi-gigabit LAN port

      The Hub Two has no 2.5Gbps or 10Gbps socket, but that does not bottleneck Plusnet's current packages, which top out at 900Mbps.

    4. Wire the devices that care

      Gaming PCs, consoles, work computers and network storage benefit most. TVs and printers can wait their turn for a wired port.

    5. Add a switch if needed

      If three usable sockets aren't enough, add a Gigabit Ethernet switch. It gives you more ports, not more speed per port.

    The Hub Two leaves you with three usable Gigabit Ethernet sockets on Full Fibre. They’re fast enough for every current Plusnet package and should cover the main wired devices in most homes. There’s no faster connection for advanced networking, but that limitation will make little difference to the average household.

    This score looks at how useful the router is if you want to plug devices in with cables, including the number of Ethernet ports, port speeds, phone ports and whether the router has the right connection for the network it uses.

    Router controls

    Plusnet’s router controls feel as old-fashioned as the Hub Two itself. There’s no app for managing your home Wi-Fi, so anything beyond the basics takes place through a browser or Plusnet’s separate online services. The essentials are present, but the whole experience is fragmented and well behind more modern routers.

    There’s no Plusnet router app

    You can’t open a Plusnet app to view connected devices or change your Wi-Fi settings. Plusnet doesn’t have a customer app at all, never mind one designed around simple router management.

    Instead, the Hub Two has a traditional settings page that you reach through a web browser. It does the job, but it’s less convenient than having everyday controls readily available on your phone.

    The useful security tools live elsewhere

    Plusnet SafeGuard lets you block unsuitable websites and set times when certain types of content can’t be accessed. There’s also a network-level firewall, giving you some useful protection before internet traffic reaches your devices.

    Plusnet Protect adds security software during the initial contract term. These are worthwhile extras, but they don’t create one joined-up control centre. Managing your router, parental controls and security means moving between different browser-based services.

    This is control at its most basic

    The Hub Two is designed to sit quietly and keep you connected, not give you detailed control over how your home network behaves. That will be perfectly acceptable if you only want to set it up once and forget about it.

    The limitations become more obvious if you want to manage individual devices, make quick changes from your phone or give one activity priority when the connection is busy. Plusnet provides none of the polished, app-based experience now available elsewhere.

    It’s another consequence of keeping the same router for too long. Plusnet covers basic administration and provides some decent security services, but the controls surrounding the Hub Two feel scattered, dated and unnecessarily awkward.

    Plusnet gives you enough control to keep an ordinary home network running, but very little convenience. There’s no router app, everyday changes rely on a browser and its useful security tools sit in separate online services. It works, but it feels like router management from another era.

    What stands out

    • No modern router-management app

      The Hub Two relies on its traditional browser administration interface rather than the kind of polished app controls supplied with newer router systems.

    • SafeGuard handles parental filtering

      Plusnet SafeGuard provides network-level parental controls, while the broadband firewall supplies an additional basic protection layer.

    • The control platform shows its age

      The Hub Two lacks WPA3 and the richer device-management, prioritisation and automated optimisation features found on more modern routers.

    The Hub Two covers basic browser-based settings, while Plusnet provides useful parental controls and network security separately. However, there’s no router app or joined-up place to manage everything.     Using your own router

    Plusnet lets you replace the Hub Two with a compatible router on Full Fibre. Your new router can connect directly to the small Openreach box where broadband enters your home, giving it full control of your Wi-Fi and wired devices. It’s a clean solution, although setting it up and keeping it working become your responsibility.

    Using your own router with Plusnet explained step-by-step

    Check that your router is suitable

    Plusnet Full Fibre uses an Openreach ONT on the wall, so your router needs an Ethernet WAN port and support for Plusnet's broadband connection settings.

    Disconnect the Hub Two from the ONT

    The ONT is the small box where the Full Fibre connection enters your home. The Plusnet Hub Two normally connects to it using Ethernet.

    Plusnet does not provide Full Fibre bridge mode on the Hub Two, so a clean replacement connects your own router directly to the ONT.

    Connect your router by Ethernet

    Run an Ethernet cable from the ONT to the correct WAN or internet port on your own router.

    Your router will then become the main router for the home rather than sitting behind the Hub Two as a second router.

    Enter the required connection settings

    Enter the Plusnet broadband username, password and other connection details requested by your router.

    Use Plusnet's current broadband-connection-settings guide and the instructions for your own router rather than guessing at the values.

    Test everything before packing the Hub Two away

    Check wired speed, Wi-Fi coverage, stability and every service you expect to use.

    Keep the supplied Hub Two available. Reconnecting it may make diagnosis much easier if you later need Plusnet's help with a broadband fault.

    A compatible third-party router can replace the Hub Two on Plusnet Full Fibre. Setup and compatibility are your responsibility, so keep Plusnet's router available for troubleshooting.

    You can remove the Hub Two completely

    Sky permits you to use a compatible third-party router with its Full A compatible router can connect directly to the Openreach Full Fibre box installed on your wall. The Hub Two doesn’t need to remain between it and your new equipment.

    That avoids running two routers together and gives your replacement full control of the home network. Plusnet also publishes the connection details you’ll need, so it doesn’t deliberately prevent you from using other equipment.

    Choosing the right router is your job

    Not every router will work simply because it has Wi-Fi. It must be suitable for a Full Fibre connection, have the correct internet socket and support Plusnet’s required connection settings.

    You’ll need to enter those settings yourself and follow the instructions supplied by the router manufacturer. Keep the Hub Two somewhere safe too, because Plusnet may ask you to reconnect it while diagnosing a broadband fault.

    Replacing it makes more sense than it should

    People normally replace a supplied router because they want wider coverage, better controls or more advanced features. With Plusnet, there’s another reason: the Hub Two is simply badly dated.

    Buying your own equipment can give you newer Wi-Fi, a proper app or a mesh system that spreads coverage around the home. It’s the only realistic upgrade route because Plusnet offers no better router or whole-home Wi-Fi service of its own.

    That makes Plusnet’s support for third-party routers genuinely useful. However, you shouldn’t need to buy new equipment immediately after joining simply to bring a modern Full Fibre package up to date.

    You already own serious kit

    If you've spent proper money on a mesh system, you may prefer it to starting again with Plusnet's ageing Hub Two.

    Plusnet offers no provider-managed whole-home system, so Eero, Deco, Orbi or another third-party setup is the practical upgrade route.

    You need specialist controls

    Third-party routers can provide deeper tools for VPNs, DNS, VLANs, firewall rules and home-network tinkering.

    You want modern Wi-Fi and security

    The Hub Two is a Wi-Fi 5 design without WPA3, while current third-party equipment can provide Wi-Fi 6 or 7 and newer security.

    You want your existing setup unchanged

    Keeping the same Wi-Fi details can save you reconnecting every phone, television, camera and smart device in the house.

    You want more traffic control

    The Hub Two's controls are basic, so detailed QoS, traffic rules and specialist gaming or home-lab features require more capable equipment.

    What changes when you use your own router?

    Your compatible router connects to the Openreach ONT and replaces the supplied Plusnet Hub Two. It then becomes responsible for the home network and the features Plusnet's equipment previously provided.

    Your router handles Wi-Fi, wired devices, guest access and whichever VPN, DNS, firewall or traffic controls it provides.

    You also become responsible for compatibility, setup and router faults. Keep the Hub Two available in case Plusnet asks you to reconnect it for diagnosis.

    Plusnet lets a compatible router replace the Hub Two and connect directly to your Full Fibre equipment. It also publishes the required connection details. You’ll be responsible for compatibility, setup and troubleshooting, but the clean replacement process provides a welcome escape from Plusnet’s badly dated supplied router.
