Edwinstowe and Carlton-in-Lindrick get absurdly fast 5Gbps broadband

Connect Fibre has launched 5Gbps broadband in two North Nottinghamshire villages. It’s remarkably quick and surprisingly affordable, although very few homes could use all that speed.

People in Edwinstowe and Carlton-in-Lindrick can now order broadband with matching download and upload speeds of up to 5Gbps. Connect Fibre’s new Fibre5000 package is available across its existing network, so this is a speed upgrade rather than the arrival of a new provider.

At the time of writing, Fibre5000 costs £44.99 per month on a 24-month contract with no price rises during that term. It includes a TP-Link Wi-Fi 7 Pro router and is available to new customers or as an upgrade for people already with Connect Fibre.

Five gigabits per second is enormously fast. In perfect conditions, it could download a 100GB game in around two minutes and 40 seconds, or carry roughly 200 simultaneous 4K streams. That’s great fun to imagine, but no ordinary household is going to watch 200 televisions at once.

The local reality is rather more ordinary

Fibredog’s local broadband data for 2026 includes 12,960 download results from across the wider NG21 and S81 postcode areas. Those areas extend well beyond Edwinstowe and Carlton-in-Lindrick, so the figures shouldn’t be treated as measurements of the two villages alone.

Across those postcodes, the median download speed is 87Mbps, up from 62.3Mbps in 2022. Gigabit broadband is available to 87.3% of premises, yet only 0.7% of this year’s results reached gigabit-class speeds. That doesn’t mean the faster networks aren’t working. Most people choose slower packages, while Wi-Fi and older devices can reduce the result.

The same limitations become much more obvious at 5Gbps. Very few laptops, televisions or games consoles have a network port fast enough to use it, and even Wi-Fi 7 is unlikely to deliver the full speed to one device. Connect Fibre’s cheaper 250Mbps, 1Gbps and 2Gbps packages will make far more sense for most households.
