TalkTalk’s 1.8 million broadband customers could end up with a new owner. Opus Broadband is working with investment firm Alchemy Partners on a possible takeover of TalkTalk’s consumer business, according to Sky News. The deal is expected to cost around £250 million, although those involved have warned that it may not happen.

Opus is currently a far smaller broadband provider, run by former Tiny Computers boss Tahir Mohsan. Buying TalkTalk would turn it into one of Britain’s largest home broadband suppliers almost overnight. Alchemy would provide the financial backing and has previous experience in telecoms, having been an investor in mobile provider Lebara.

For TalkTalk customers, nothing has changed. TalkTalk remains your provider, your existing package continues and your bills should be paid in the usual way. Do not cancel your Direct Debit or give payment information to anybody who contacts you unexpectedly. Any genuine change will be explained through TalkTalk’s official customer channels.

What happens if TalkTalk is sold?

A change of ownership does not normally interrupt your broadband or wipe away your existing contract. Your service and agreed terms would usually transfer with the business. If a new owner later made changes that were not to your benefit, Ofcom rules would generally require at least one month’s notice and the opportunity to leave without an early termination charge.

TalkTalk’s consumer business has already operated separately from its wholesale network division, PlatformX Communications, since 2024. Octopus Investments is currently negotiating to buy that network business. Even if the two parts gain different owners, TalkTalk services can continue over the same underlying connections. A takeover would not automatically mean a new cable, router or broadband package.

There is no completed sale to prepare for. Vodafone has also shown interest in TalkTalk’s consumer business, while TalkTalk could remain under its present ownership if no bidder reaches an agreement. Until customers receive a formal notification, takeover headlines are simply updates on negotiations taking place behind the scenes rather than instructions to take action.
