Wi-Fi quality

In this section we're going to look at every factor determining the quality of the Wi-Fi experience you're going to get from a Virgin Media router. Right now, those are the Hub 5 or the Hub 5x, depending on whether you live somewhere you can get Virgin's older network (Cable, up to 1.1Gbps, Hub 5), or its new one (XGS-PON, up to 2Gbps, Hub 5x).

Key differences

Different rear connections

The Hub 5 has a coaxial (thick, round) cable connection at the back, similar to how old-fashioned TV aerials plug into your TV. The Hub 5x has an XGS-PON port (Virgin's own brand of Full Fibre) that has a much thinner cable that's a bit easier to manage. Which you get doesn't depend on the package you choose, it depends on which network serves your street.

No modem mode on the 5x

Virgin's Modem Mode allows you to essentially turn off the Wi-Fi network and let your own router do it instead. This can be useful as it prevents you adding another unnecessary Wi-Fi network when you attach your own router to it. It's not essential, though. You can still plug your own router into the 5x and have it as your main home Wi-Fi network – it's just it will overlap with the 5x's existing one. It's only slightly less than ideal and not something you should really worry about.

Self-installation

We've marked the 5x as not self-installable. That's because Virgin's newest network is still rolling out, so it's quite unusual right now for you to already have that version of the network running into your home. In a few years, we expect the 5x to be self-installable for people with Virgin's latest network already fitted, but for now an engineer visit is going to be needed in the vast majority of cases.

Virgin Media has two networks

Virgin cable areas

You get the Hub 5.

This is Virgin Media’s main network. If your street uses it, the Hub 5 is the router supplied.

Virgin Full Fibre (XGS-PON) areas

You get the Hub 5x.

Some newer areas use Virgin’s XGS-PON Full Fibre network. If your address is on that network, you get the Hub 5x.

Your address decides

You do not choose between them.

Virgin Media checks your address, then supplies the service and router that match the network available where you live.

Wi-Fi quality on the Hub 5

So where does this leave us? Well, features and stats are one thing, but in the real world, the Hub 5 is neither the greatest router there is, nor is it the worst when it comes to providing a quality Wi-Fi experience. It's mid.

Providers are bound by what they can provide to you for free at a reasonable price. There are bigger, rangier and more capable beasts out there if you have the money to add your own router and are prepared to spend serious money. But by the same token, the Hub 5 is likely to impress you if you're living in a reasonably sized home.

And even if you're living in something much bigger than average, Virgin Media allows you to add on so-called 'mesh devices' (because they form a mesh with your Hub 5) to reach any blind spots in your home. Some providers offer mesh systems for free, though. And with Virgin Media, they're only free if you opt for the highest speed packages.

Ultimately, the Hub 5 is perfectly adequate for most homes, with some caveats.

Wi-Fi quality on the Hub 5x

The biggest surprise with the Hub 5x is that Virgin Media didn't opt for a radical upgrade to the Hub 5. Since the 5x was initially only offered on its Gig2 packages, it really should have been a router designed to offer everything to those who like to be on the cutting edge – so-called 'power users'.

Instead, it is in most ways the same router as the Hub 5. Sure, its fastest LAN (wired internet) port is 10Gbps instead of 2.5Gbps as on the Hub 5. But there is no evidence the Hub 5x serves more concurrent devices, delivers faster Wi-Fi generally, or offers more range.

Not only that, the Hub 5x's lack of a modem mode may leave a lot of people feeling like they're getting the worse of the two. A lot more people will want to exclusively pipe their internet to a router they bought to handle the Wi-Fi than can make use of a 10Gbps LAN port.

We strongly suspect a successor to the 5x won't be long coming, and with it we'll see a step up to faster Wi-Fi 7, more power, more range and able to handle more devices. Till then, there's not much to choose between the two.

Virgin Media’s Wi-Fi quality is solid, but not class-leading. The Hub 5 and Hub 5x both offer modern Wi-Fi 6, decent device capacity and optional Wi-Fi Pods, but you do not get the very latest Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 hardware.

Router Range

Truth is, only a handful of provider routers offer any meaningful range over the average. Virgin Media's routers are somewhat better than dead-average in this regard, though. Let's take a look at how it fares and what it means for Wi-Fi in your home.

Range is identical between Hub 5 and 5x

Both of these routers operate off the same basic platform – 7 antennas, beamforming (where the router is able to concentrate signal in the direction of devices) – and they both operate from the same Wi-Fi 6 standard. There's really nothing to choose between them range-wise, which is why our Router Range Estimator tool won't show a difference between the two.

Less solid houses are better for Wi-Fi range

If the three little pigs needed Wi-Fi, there's no doubt the pig with the straw house would get the most consistent signal (albeit at the cost of greater wolf risk). Basically, the more solid the materials your home is constructed from, the fewer walls your Wi-Fi will easily pass through – the shorter your range is going to be.

Range can be terrible regardless

Irrespective of the material your home is made from, you can still suffer quite badly from Wi-Fi range issues simply because there are a large number of neighbouring networks competing for the airwaves. That's not just with Virgin Media, that's with any provider. Blocks of flats can be especially bad for this as you'll often have a dozen or more Wi-Fi networks all struggling to compete with one another.

Virgin Media routers have automatic channel switching

The 'channel' a router uses determines what part of the frequency band it aims to send and receive Wi-Fi data on. Most routers allow you to change the channel manually, and so does Virgin Media, but it also automates the process. Your Hub 5 or 5x will automatically select the channel with the least congestion.

How to use the Router Range Estimator

It’s pretty straightforward. Select the router from this provider, and the main construction materials of your internal walls on the left. It’s important to remember, though, that this is an estimator.

It can give you a rough idea, but local factors like neighbouring network interference or mixed material wall set-ups can mean the results vary considerably from the estimate. It’s meant to give you a rule of thumb and only that.

How to maximise your Virgin Media router's range

  1. Place it centrally

    Put the router as close to the middle of your home as you can, out in the open and away from thick walls.

  2. Measure each room

    Use a speed test in every room and note where the signal drops. Our Whole Home Wi-Fi Calculator tool further down this page is designed to do this exact job.

  3. Check the channel

    Virgin Media routers switch channels automatically, but not always perfectly. Check whether a busier channel is hurting performance.

  4. Clear obvious blockers

    Keep it away from TVs, metal objects, mirrors, cupboards and appliances. Small obstructions can make a big difference.

  5. Fine-tune and retest

    Move it a little, raise it slightly, restart it, then test again. If weak rooms remain, you may need to add Virgin WiFi Max to your package.

Faster Wi-Fi has shorter legs

Wi-Fi behaves exactly like sound. Ever notice how you hear the bass (the low frequencies) a few rooms away, but can't hear the treble (the high frequencies)? It's the same here. The higher the frequency, the more detail there is in the signal, but the lower frequencies make it through far more walls.

That's the exact difference between Wi-Fi bands. 2.4GHz is the slow old workhorse: not glamorous, not especially quick, but better at reaching the awkward room at the back. 5GHz is faster and better for streaming, gaming and newer devices, but it gives up sooner as you move away from the router.

Virgin Media’s current routers are Wi-Fi 6, not Wi-Fi 7: that is not automatically a bad thing for range. Wi-Fi 7 can be faster at short range, especially when 6GHz is involved, but the really fast stuff is more like a Lamborghini car than a Lamborghini tractor: Brilliant on a clear road, but much less so once there are obstacles.

Virgin Media’s router range is better than average, but not exceptional. The Hub 5 and Hub 5x both have 7 antennas, beamforming and Wi-Fi 6, but neither gives you the longer-term headroom of Wi-Fi 7 or any sort of major step-change in how well Wi-Fi can and should function around your home. And that can be a bit of a problem for Gig1 and Gig2.

Whole-home Wi-Fi

This section looks at the whole-home Wi-Fi offering from Virgin Media – the additional 'WiFi Pods' available, whether they're free or require a high-tier package or paid add-on, and whether the maximum number of three is going to be enough for every home.

What is Virgin WiFi Max?

There are a bunch of different terms you might hear used to describe this. A mesh system, range extenders, whole home Wi-Fi and more, but they all refer to the same thing: additional, usually smaller and less flexible, Wi-Fi routers you place around the house in order to help Wi-Fi reach everywhere. WiFi Max is Virgin Media's name for their version of this system.

In Virgin Media terms, these are called WiFi Pods. The way they work is like three people on three mountain tops. Mountain one guy can signal to mountain two guy, but not mountain three guy. So he's relying on mountain two guy to pass on the message to mountain three. Yes, just like in The Lord Of The Rings.

Virgin Media doesn't offer them free on most of its packages

It is fast becoming more common to find providers offering whole home Wi-Fi systems for free. But with Virgin Media you only get WiFi Max if you plump for one of their fastest packages. 'Makes sense', you might think, but you'd be wrong. It makes no sense at all.

You see, the thing is, if you've got a corner of the house where your Wi-Fi signal is weak and slow, it doesn't matter what the headline speed of your package is. You can upgrade your package to a bajillion megabits per second and still find you haven't sped up in that spot. So some homes will need a Pod or Pods no matter which package is right for you.

Virgin limits you to three WiFi Pods

And sure. Three is probably more than most people will need. But tell that to someone living in an old, brick and stone constructed house with three or more floors, where the average router struggles to pass Wi-Fi to the next room, let alone upstairs. There are always going to be edge cases, and if you compare that with Sky, for example, they offer up to six.

Three is more than enough for 99.9% of homes, though, so we shouldn't judge them too harshly for that. And if you did end up getting six from Sky, you would absolutely be paying Sky through the nose for it. We just wish these Virgin Pods were free, as standard, on every package.

    Virgin Media’s Wi-Fi Max is a nice boon if you get a Gig1, Gig2 or Volt package, where it's included for free. It is less generous on lower-tier packages though, and it sticks in the throat you have to pay extra to get even one Pod on those packages.

    Wired connectivity

    Most households will care about the Wi-Fi and nothing else, and that’s completely fair. It’s tricky to hook up every device in your network with a LAN port directly to your router via a cable, and in most scenarios totally not worth it.

    However, for those of you planning to plump for either Gig1 or Gig2, those wired LAN ports are going to be the only way you’re going to be able to use all of the available speed to, for example, download a giant videogame. So it’s worth considering what connections Virgin Media’s routers have and what sort of speeds you can expect.

    The Hub 5 and Hub 5x have different ports

    This is actually one of the big differences between Virgin’s routers. The Hub 5 has one 2.5Gbps port and three 1Gbps ports, while the 5x has one 10Gbps port and three 1Gbps ports.

    Right now this makes no practical difference whatsoever, since Virgin Media’s top speed is 2Gbps with the Gig2 package. It does, however, mean the 5x is technically more future-proof. We say ‘technically’ because by the time speeds exceeding 2.5Gbps become common, we will likely be three generations of routers down the line.

    Cabled (LAN) connections are less useful than Wi-Fi

    Let’s say you did have a bunch of devices you wanted to connect directly to your router to avoid your speeds being limited by slower Wi-Fi. How would that work practically?

    Unless you’re prepared to have a LAN network wired into your house, or have cables spilling everywhere, you’re going to be limited to one device being able to reach the router physically via a cable, and it’ll have to be in the same room as the router.

    How a simple wired Virgin Media network works

    Plugging devices directly into your router gives them a steadier connection than Wi-Fi. These router diagrams show the physical Ethernet ports, including any ONT or internet port used by the broadband connection itself.

    Check which port is the internet input before counting how many wired device ports you have spare.

    Use the fastest spare LAN port for the device or switch that needs the most speed.

    Both routers have ports for a digital landline

    Perhaps more practically, you do get two ports on each of Virgin’s routers for plugging in a digital landline. Of course, you will have to bolt a landline onto your package, since Virgin Media no longer supplies a landline as standard.

    If you need multiple handsets throughout the house, you’ll need to buy a separate multi-handset cordless DECT phone system. These can be bought from providers like BT, or from your more traditional electronics manufacturers, like Panasonic.

    A system like this basically has one base station, which plugs into one of the telephone ports on your Hub 5 or Hub 5x, and then other handsets in the system can be put in other rooms, communicating with the base station via your home Wi-Fi network. This is definitely one area where things are absolutely not as simple as they used to be.

    



    How to make best use of your Hub 5 or Hub 5x LAN ports

    1. Start with the fast port

      Both routers have one faster LAN port. Use it for the device where a wired connection matters most.

    2. On Hub 5, don’t overthink it

      The 2.5Gbps port is already faster than Virgin Media’s Gig1 cable broadband, so the real-world benefit is usually tiny.

    3. On Hub 5x, Gig2 changes things

      If you have Gig2, the 10Gbps port can help a wired device get more of that speed than a standard 1Gbps port can.

    4. Use the standard ports freely

      The three 1Gbps ports are still plenty for TVs, consoles, printers and most home office kit.

    5. Only add extra kit if you need it

      If you want more wired devices in more rooms, you’ll need extra networking kit or cabling around the home.

    Virgin Media scores very well for wired connectivity. Both the Hub 5 and Hub 5x give you four Ethernet ports, and both include one faster port for the device where a wired connection matters most.

    This score looks at how useful the router is if you want to plug devices in with cables, including the number of Ethernet ports, port speeds, phone ports and whether the router has the right connection for the network it uses.

    Router controls

    It's one thing getting the superest, duperest router when it comes to raw speeds and bleeding edge tech – Virgin Media's routers are some way off that – and another altogether in terms of how easy it is to understand and control. Virgin Media does okay here, with some caveats.

    Limited controllability from the Virgin Media app

    The Virgin Media app – downloadable to your phone or tablet from the usual stores (Apple, Google) – is useful, but quite limited when it comes to deep router control. You'll still need to use browser admin access for that.

    The main thing it offers in terms of controllability is the ability to make a sweeping check for faults and glitches. The app will report back, get your router reset if there's a gremlin in the system, and even report faults that can't be fixed by 'switching it off and on again' to Virgin Media.

    If it's something that needs more than the basics it will direct you to an agent to get help with the issue.

    You will still need to log in from a browser if you want to change anything

    It's a bit of a missed opportunity. Virgin Media has an app, but you can't use it for anything that controls specific elements of the router, like turning modem mode on or off, port forwarding, QoS controls and so on.

    You could of course argue that if you're the sort of person that wants to go tinkering around in your router's deeper settings, you probably know what you're doing enough to be able to accomplish that using the Hub's IP address and a browser connected to your network. But, the app has the opportunity to make that accessible to everyone, and it simply doesn't do that.

    There's a reset button, but no Wi-Fi on/off control

    If your home network goes pear-shaped, the reset button at the back of both the Hub 5 and the Hub 5x is very useful. It's essentially 'turning it off and on again' without having to pull the power from the wall or from the back of the router.

    But, one could argue there's no need for a modem mode at all on either router if there was a simple switch to turn the Wi-Fi network on and off. Virgin Media obviously thought of this and our guess would be they decided that a bajillion tech support phone calls from people who accidentally toggled that switch was not a reasonable trade-off. And you know what? When all is said and done, neither do we.

    There are a lot of deep, and often useful controls on Virgin Media's two routers, but you will require some degree of technical knowledge to accomplish most things. Or YouTube. Virgin Media deliberately makes changing things that might break your network hard to get to, and honestly? That's sound logic.

    What stands out

    • Easy app control

      The Virgin Media app covers the everyday jobs most people need, such as setting up your Hub, measuring your broadband speed and resetting your Hub password.

    • Browser settings are still there

      If you need to do something more complex, both routers also let you log in through a browser for those deeper settings.

    • Good basics, one notable difference

      Both routers cover guest Wi-Fi, security, WPS, updates and reset controls, but only the Hub 5 has modem mode.

    Virgin Media gives you a solid set of router controls, but with a few caveats. The app is useful for checks and simple help, while deeper settings still need the browser admin page.

    Using your own router

    Virgin Media allows it, and it's dead easy. There are a host of reasons you might want to do this. Maybe you have your own mesh network already set up before switching across to Virgin. Maybe you just need something more powerful than the routers Virgin Media offers free?

    Using your own router with Virgin Media explained step-by-step

    Check which Virgin Media router you have

    The setup depends on whether you have the Hub 5 or the Hub 5x. Both let you connect your own router, but they don't handle it in quite the same way. The Hub 5 supports modem mode. The Hub 5x doesn't, so it needs a different workaround.

    Put the Hub 5 into modem mode, if available

    With the Hub 5, modem mode turns off the Virgin Media router’s own Wi-Fi and passes the connection through to your own router using an Ethernet cable.

    This is the cleaner option because your own router takes over the main networking job.

    Connect your own router by Ethernet

    Connect your own router to the Virgin Media hub using an Ethernet cable. On the Hub 5, this is normally done after enabling modem mode.

    On the Hub 5x, you can still connect your own router by Ethernet, but the Wi-Fi network coming from it stays active.

    Handle the Hub 5x Wi-Fi limitation

    The Hub 5x does not have modem mode, so you cannot fully shut the Virgin Media router down and use it purely as a modem.

    That means your own router can work, but the Hub 5x may still broadcast its own Wi-Fi network, adding more wireless traffic in your home.

    Test the connection and tidy up your Wi-Fi

    Once your own router is connected, test Wi-Fi coverage, speed and stability around the home.

    If you've got a Hub 5x, make sure your devices connect to your own router’s Wi-Fi rather than the Virgin Media hub’s network where possible.

    The Hub 5 is better for third-party router use. The Hub 5 has modem mode, while the Hub 5x doesn't. You can still use your own router with the Hub 5x, but it is not as clean a setup.

    The Hub 5 and Hub 5x both allow you to use your own router

    In both cases, the job is the same. Buy your own router, set it up, then run an Ethernet cable from the LAN port of your new router to the LAN/WAN port of your Virgin Media Hub.

    Virgin's Hub 5 has an exclusive modem mode

    Modem mode basically switches off your Hub 5's Wi-Fi network and hands off all the work to your third-party router. This is useful because it means you won't have an additional Wi-Fi network running in your house.

    The more Wi-Fi networks there are running locally, the more likely they are to interfere with each other and slow down your Wi-Fi. Modem mode means you don't have to worry about that.

    The Hub 5x has no modem mode

    For reasons known only to Virgin Media, the Hub 5x has no modem mode, which means the Wi-Fi network coming from your Hub 5x will still be running at the same time as your main network supplied by your own router.

    It's less than ideal, but not a dealbreaker. You can still plug in your own router, and it will work.
